MANILA - The Department of Science and Technology said Tuesday it was developing tools to encourage more Filipinos to work from home, as automation threatened to displace thousands in the outsourcing sector.

Artificial intelligence can displace up to 40,000 workers by 2022, but at the same time, will create opportunities for nearly 700,000 medium to highly-skilled employees, according to industry estimates.

"One of the things we should study is how work can be done more comfortably at home... We would like to think of the timeline as the next 3 years," DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña told ABS-CBN News.

Work at home is a "very positive social development" because this will allow parents more time with their children and reduce the number of commuters on the streets.

"We are more on the opportunity seeking side. We know there are threats but we would like to address the opportunities. Therefore, we are looking at the development of products that can serve not only the Philippine market but also the global market," he said.
